| 002. Bang Bang, My Baby Shot Me Down |
[mon feb 8th, 2010 »11:32a] |
If anyone was giving any consideration to getting shot, I will say right now that I would discourage it. The initial phase of being shot was very unpleasant in and of itself, the process of extracting sharpnel? scrapnel shrapnel from my neck and jaw was both drawn out and exceedingly uncomfortable, and the healing process that followed was certainly no picnic in the park. Out of all of my experiences as an auror, I would rank being shot as the least rewarding. Still, if the stray bullet that hit me was one less that hit Minister Riddle, I am glad to have been standing where I was when the incident occurred.
My sympathies go out to the families of those who were victimized, and to the Vance family in what must be a very difficult time. Gilbert Vance was clearly a very sick man whose now-evident psychological derangement went untreated for too long. I only hope that in the future, programs will be enacted to educate the public so that warnings signs will no longer be ignored or misinterpreted, and this sort of tragedy can be prevented.
[Private to Death Eaters] If nobody has killed Gilbert Vance yet, I would like to volunteer. That mudblood left a dent in my neck the approximate shape and size of Lincolnshire. [/Private]

| 001. Family Matters |
[mon nov 23rd, 2009 »8:27p] |
[Private] Claudia and I recently invited Flavius to our home for dinner so that I might discuss with him how he plans to proceed in the coming months. Though his mother has offered frequent assurances of the contrary, it seems that Flavius still has yet to choose an appropriate occupation despite the fact that his graduation from Hogwarts is now long past. Of course, given Juvena's incessant coddling, I have my concerns that the boy will grow soft, entirely unfit to bear the family name, much less carry it in on the event that I pass before Aurelius has reached legal age. Our father's lack of concern regarding his aimlessness has been nearly as troubling as the aimlessness itself. The latter, of course, is far less in keeping with an established character, which makes me concerned that the old man may be growing senile. Certainly the performance of neither inspires confidence.
If he has yet to choose a respectable career by year's end, my choice will be made for me, and the boy will be recruited for a ministry post regardless of his personal preferences. He has been given ample time to find an alternative, and his indecisive nature is his own character flaw, and no concern of mine. Besides, the appointment would prove mutually beneficial. He's not entirely devoid of useful skills, at least. While he's certainly not as clever as some, he is a Selwyn, and as such more than capable of handling ministry employment. Certainly far more capable than many of my underlings whose mistakes I constantly find myself correcting while there is a multitude of far more important things that I should be doing. Still, perhaps I will request that Flavius be stationed in my own department so that I might catch any of his mistakes before they achieve the status of public scandal. I do so dearly love keeping children out of trouble.
We haven't yet decided to press the issue of marriage with him. He is a man, after all. He has plenty of time to worry about choosing an acceptable mate, and I hardly think he's prepared to be head of a household now. Juvena still has the boy tangled up in her apron strings, and no self-respecting woman would be pleased to marry such a child. He isn't an heir, and he can't afford to keep sinking his stock. Still, I suppose I should count my blessings - at least he didn't waste pure, centuries-old Peverell blood to run off and marry a mudblood straight out of Hogwarts.
But then, I suppose he learned his lesson.

Aurelius has finally begun to show definitive signs of magic. Of course, it seems quite ridiculous to say "finally" of an eight-year-old, but of course Claudia and I have been watching him like a hawk for the first sign of unusual behavior in our eagerness to boast of his magical brilliance. I've been terrified that I would miss it, as the department has certainly had its hands full of late. But today, when he was asked to finish his duck, he made his water goblet explode, and we were so thrilled we nearly forgot to be cross. We've already started theorizing about what house he'll be sorted into. Of course, he is preceded by a long line of Slytherins, but we would be well pleased to see him sorted into any other house. Perhaps a bit disappointed to see the legacy disrupted, but what does any parent desire more than the happiness of his children?
Of course, I don't mean to be one of those fathers who constantly natters on about his own children and won't hear a word of anyone else's, so I will give you an in: when did your children start to show signs of magic, those of you whose children have? Lucius, Narcissa, I'm sure you're dying to tell me all about young Draco, so please feel free to offer your wildest speculation.
